Work for yourself, or let out property?
HMRC now wants a tax update from you every three months, on top of the return you already do. Five a year instead of one. We do all five - the records, the software, the sending, the lot.
That’s if more than £50,000 came in on your 2024/25 return, before costs. It drops to £30,000 from April 2027. Not sure? The checker takes a minute.
£29 a month if it all goes through the bank. £45 if there’s cash or CIS in the mix. £59 if you work for yourself and let property too.
Not convinced once we’ve filed your first one? Every penny back.
Not open yet. Put your name down and we’ll email you the day we are. The first 100 keep their price.
It used to be one tax return a year, and you could do it in January from a year’s bank statements. Now, if you’re self-employed or let out property and more than £50,000 came in on your 2024/25 return, before costs, you have to keep the records digitally as you go, in software HMRC recognises that you’d have to pick, set up and learn, and send an update every three months on top. Same tax. Four times the faff, and the records can’t wait for January.
If you’re in it, these are the dates. Every one of them is ours.
All five are ours. 7 August has been and gone. If you missed it, there are no penalty points for a late quarterly update this tax year. The next one is 7 November.
Doing it yourself means picking software off HMRC’s list and usually paying for it, learning it, typing every payment in as you go from 6 April, then sending the four updates and the final one. Three months behind is an evening. Seven is a weekend. None of it is hard on its own. It’s that it never stops.
Builders, CIS subbies, hairdressers, drivers, cleaners, gardeners, sparkies, consultants, childminders, market traders, anyone letting out a property. If the money coming in was over £50,000 on your 2024/25 return, the one you sent in by January 2026, you’re already in it. That drops to £30,000 in April 2027, which pulls in a lot more people.
It’s the money before your costs come out, and rent and self-employed work get added together. Only those two count. A pension, a salary or savings interest don’t. £25,000 of rent and £27,000 of work is £52,000. You’re in, even though neither felt big on its own. The full sum, and what doesn’t count.
On CIS? It’s what you invoiced before the 20% came off. £58,000 invoiced and £46,000 in the bank is £58,000 to HMRC, and you’re in. The 20% they already took comes off what you owe in January, and we keep track of it.
Builder or trade? There’s a page just for you.
What you actually get
Four times a year, this turns up. That’s the whole product.
The point isn’t the detail. It’s that you knew about January in November and didn’t have to lift a finger to find out.
Want the detail - which job made what, where the money went? Ask and we’ll send it. Most people never do.
Fifteen minutes. We check this actually applies to you, tell you exactly what it’ll cost, and answer whatever you want to ask. If you’d be better off on your own, we’ll say so.
An ID check on your phone, a tick to say the regulated firm behind Boxed Off can deal with HMRC for you, and a link to your bank so the figures come through on their own. Look only. We can’t move anything. We walk you through it. Got an accountant? We handle the handover - you don’t have the awkward conversation.
We keep the records, do the four updates and prepare the one at the end. You get a message each time. In January you look over the year-end figures and say yes before they go in. Nothing to download, nothing to log into, nothing to learn.
No. You never give us a login, a PIN or a card number. Here’s exactly what a bank link is.
The ID check isn’t us being nosy. Anyone handling tax for someone else has to check who they are by law. Every accountant does it. Two minutes on your phone.
We don’t hold your card. Payment is Direct Debit, set up through your own bank, and you can cancel it there yourself.
All of it through the year, plus one thing once a year at the end.
And once a year: each January you look over the year-end figures we’ve prepared and say they’re right before we send them. That bit stays with you by law. A few minutes.
One thing to know before the call. The tax year started in April, so if you join part-way through there are months to catch up on. We charge those at your normal monthly rate and spread them over your first six payments, with nothing added for spreading. Join in October on the £29 plan and it’s £58 a month for six months, then £29. On £45 it’s £90, then £45. Join later and the catch-up is bigger, still spread over six. You get the exact figure on the call and in writing before you say yes. And if the first update doesn’t convince you, it all comes back - catch-up included.
Doing it yourself isn’t free either. HMRC-recognised software is usually £10 to £30 a month on its own, and what that buys you is a blank screen to fill in. Ours includes the software and the filling in.
The year-end return means your whole return, not just the self-employed pages. If there’s something unusual on yours, we say so on the call, before you decide. If HMRC ever opens an enquiry, that’s a separate job and we tell you what it costs before it costs you anything.
Not sure which plan you are? We’ll tell you on the call, and we’d rather put you on the cheaper one and move you up if we’re wrong than the other way round.
Once you’re up and running, pay for the year ahead and one month’s free. Two of you on the same property? Second person is half price.
Leave whenever you like, online, 30 days’ notice. No exit fee. Any catch-up still to come is settled on the way out and nothing else, and we send you all your records.
Twenty-two years doing your own return, and no intention of starting a filing system at sixty-one.
Fair enough. That’s roughly who this is for.
Up to six questions, about a minute. You get the answer on screen - you don’t have to give us anything.
A good guess from what you tell us, not an official answer. We’d check it properly before you did anything about it.
Fifteen years doing the numbers inside a large listed bank - working out what was coming, what it would cost, and explaining it to people who didn’t have time for the detail. That last part turns out to be most of this job.
I’ve filed my own return for years, so I know exactly which bit of this you’ve been dreading.
I’m not going to dress it up: the work itself isn’t glamorous. It’s records, deadlines and getting the numbers right. It just shouldn’t be yours to worry about.
Two parts to this. Fj runs Boxed Off and does the day-to-day: the records, the messages, the questions. He isn’t acting as your accountant, and we won’t dress him up as one.
The HMRC side will sit with a regulated firm, and every filing will go through them, not through Fj personally. Their name and registration go on this page, and in writing to you, before anyone pays a penny.
A real person checks everything before it goes to HMRC. Not a robot. The one bit that stays yours is the year-end: each January you look over the figures we’ve prepared and say they’re right before we send them.
We open shortly. Two things have to happen first: getting registered with the people who supervise firms like ours under the money-laundering rules, and the regulated firm that will act for you with HMRC signing on. Neither has a shortcut, and we’ll email you the day both are done. You’ll have the name of the regulated firm acting for you with HMRC in writing before you pay a penny.
If 7 November is on your mind: there are no penalty points for a late quarterly update this tax year. If we’re open in time, we catch you up, August included. If we’re not, we’ll tell you straight, in time for you to decide.
The first 100 people keep their price for as long as they stay, whatever happens to it later. No payment, no commitment, and you can still say no on the day.
£29, £45 or £59 a month, plus a catch-up for the months since April if you join mid-year, spread over six payments. Every penny back if the first one doesn’t convince you. We’re telling you now so nothing lands on you later.
If you’re self-employed or you rent out property, and the money coming in was more than £50,000 in 2024/25, then yes - since April 2026. It’s the money before your costs come out, and rent and self-employed work get added together. The £50,000 drops to £30,000 in April 2027.
That’s been happening since September 2026 - HMRC has started signing people up who hadn’t got round to it. The letter leaves you with a list: get software, catch your records up from April, start filing every three months. Forward it to us. There’s a twenty-minute set-up on your phone, then everything the letter asks for is our job. Here’s what the letter actually wants, in full.
It’s a job, not a disaster. There are no penalty points for late quarterly updates this tax year - they start in April 2027. We’ll get you straight and tell you exactly where you stand first. What to do if you’re behind.
No. We hold the software, it’s on HMRC’s recognised list and on our licence, and we do the work in it. Nothing to buy, nothing to install, nothing to log into. If that sounds too easy, it’s because the complicated part is real - it’s just ours now instead of yours.
No. We do the four updates and the year-end return, so on the self-employment and property side there’s nothing left for them to do. We handle the handover and you don’t have the awkward conversation. If they’ll do all five for less, stay with them.
Maybe. If you’re happy to pick the software, keep your records in it as you go, send the four updates and do the year-end yourself, you don’t need us. We’re for people who’d rather pay from £29 a month not to. Not sure which you are? Say so on the call and we’ll tell you straight.
Yes, and usually not the way people expect. The £50,000 is measured on what you invoiced before the 20% came off - so if £58,000 was invoiced and £46,000 reached your bank, HMRC is looking at the £58,000 and you’re in. The 20% they already took comes off what you owe in January, and we keep track of it. More on CIS here.
No, and nobody can offer that. You’re still the taxpayer and what you owe is what you owe. What we take on is the work and the deadlines. Miss one and it’s our fault, we cover the penalty and refund that month.
Any time, online, 30 days’ notice. No exit fee. We send you all your records so whoever comes next can pick them straight up.
Yes. Ring 07501 058900 or message on WhatsApp. If you’d rather we rang you, email fjordi897@gmail.com with your number and a good time.
Not yet, and we’re not going to pretend there is. It’s email or WhatsApp, on the number in the footer, and a link to send us things. We’ll build an app when there are enough people to build it for.
